Urgent Call: The Need for Educators

We must Increase the number and preparedness of all teachers available to Sacramento County Public School Districts.

8-10,000

The expansion of Transitional Kindergarten in California means we need 8,000–10,000 more TK teachers statewide.

196

In Sacramento County, we will need approximately 196 new Transitional Kindergarten teachers and 100 Preschool teachers by 2025–2026.

3 million

California has almost 3 million children under the age of 5, yet we trail behind other states in access to early education.

80%

In Sacramento County, there is projected to be an 80% shortage of Special Education teachers in 2023–2025.

37%

Only 37% of California children under 5 are enrolled in transitional kindergarten and state-subsidized preschool programs.

Early Learning

The Sacramento County of Education (SCOE) Career Pipeline supports the full continuum of professional careers in early learning and care. The pipeline is a roadmap to the profession which is defined by a series of flexible paths starting with sparking an interest in high school students and continuing with support for aspiring preschool and transitional kindergarten teachers.

School of Education

Teaching Credential & Leadership and Administrative Credential

SCOE’s School of Education includes programs that help new teachers get their credentials and aspiring leaders become administrators. Its mission is to provide high-quality credential programs and professional development to support teachers and leaders in the Capital Region. The School of Education is comprised of two divisions: Teaching and Leading.

The “Teaching” division of the School of Education includes an Intern Program and an Induction Program. The Intern Program supports candidates in a variety of ways during their mandatory “pre-service” and during their time as full-time teachers during the two years of the Intern Program. The Teacher Induction Program supports teachers who have earned their preliminary credentials, are in their first two years of teaching with their preliminary credentials and are working to further develop their teaching practice.
